Sailing as a Form of Sport

Historical evidences and past studies show that sailing has been an essential player in the advance and development of civilization. Early men sailed to travel and explore different places, sell goods, catch fish, and even go to war. Aside from these activities, sailing today is also considered as a form of sport and leisure activity. Technological inventions and discoveries played a great role in making sailing what it is today ? safer, easier, and more convenient. Modern marine electronic tools such as fish finders, Raymarine GPS, autopilot, and radars, among others, are used in sailing and navigation. These state-of-the-art marine gadgets are considered to be crucial instruments in ensuring sea safety.

Since the 1890s, sailing has been considered as a form of sport; the sport was called yachting until 1996. It was included in the roster of sport activities in the Games of the Olympiad Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece in 1896. However, due to severe weather conditions then, the Olympics committee decided to cancel the sailing competition. It was in 1900 Olympic Games when the sport finally made its debut. In the 1904 Summer Olympics, the sport was not included again in the Olympic agenda due to several reasons. Apart from these two happenings, sailing is continuously included in Olympic Games in the latter years.

For fanatics, sports enthusiasts, and sailing competition participants, they are most probably aware of an organization officially governing the sport. The International Sailing Federation of ISAF is a worldwide recognized ruling body for the sport of sailing. The International Olympic Committee acknowledges the role and power of ISAF in administering sailing activities and competitions. ISAF was initially known as IYRU or International Yacht Racing Union. It was founded by several authorities in the sports of sailing who met and gathered up in Paris, France in 1907. They talked about sailing and decided on a unified set of regulations for the sport.

Because of the many forms of equipment and boats used, sailing is considered a diverse form of sport. There are different kinds of sailing competitions derived from the various kinds of boats available. We have kitesurfing, model boat racing, and yacht racing, among others. All of the sailing sport activities are governed by a single set of rules. The Racing Rules of Sailing, or commonly known as RRS, serves as the standard operating rules for every sailing activity. ISAF upgrades and revises the set of rules every four years. The set of rules used today are effective from 2009 until 2012.
