South Dallas Fire Destroys Home, Kills 9 Pets ? CBS Dallas / Fort ...

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) ? An overnight fire in South Dallas destroyed a family home and claimed the lives of nine of the family?s dogs, including a litter of seven puppies.

The fire began just after midnight in the 4900 block of Gurley Avenue at South Fitzhugh Avenue, near Fair Park.

When firefighters arrived, the family had evacuated the house, which was fully engulfed in flames.

No one was hurt, but two adult chihuahuas and a litter of seven puppies died in the fire. An adult poodle and a white lab escaped the fire. A black lab was missing following the fire, but has since returned safely to the family.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

[VIDEO] Meet the Puerto Rican banjo player in Philadelphia?s New Year?s Day Parade

Every New Year?s Day for the past decade, Carl Sanchez has been strumming his banjo in the 113-year-old Mummer?s Parade ? a tradition in which 10,000 men and women dressed in bright, colorful costumes, march and twirl for two miles up one of Philadelphia?s main streets.

The term ?Mummer? is German and means ?to costume or masquerade.? In the 1600s, Swedish settlers to Philadelphia?s outskirts celebrated Christmas by asking their neighbors for dessert and liquor by dressing up, and chanting and shooting firearms. The party eventually moved to New Year?s Day and evolved into a series of neighborhood parades. As more immigrants moved to the area, each group added their own cultural flair to the local customs. In 1901, the tradition of the first recognized and judged Mummers Parade began.

?It?s a unique parade,? says Sanchez, 45, who travels from New Jersey to Philadelphia every year. ?There?s nothing else like this in the U.S. It?s steeped in the tradition of Philadelphia?A whole year?s worth of work all for one day ? it?s really something special.?

Sanchez is one of the only Latinos in the parade. Although his dad was born in Puerto Rico, he is a part of the 64-member Polish-American String Band ? a band that has been performing in the Mummer?s Parade for the past 80 years, and has won 11 first place prizes within that time.

?I am one of the few Latinos in the Parade,? says Sanchez who recently found out that a friend of his father?s son from Puerto Rico also plays in one of the string bands of the parade. ?It?s a strange coincidence.?

Although Sanchez grew up in New Jersey, he says he feels a bond to Philadelphia, because that?s where his parents lived when they first got married in the 1950?s, and it is the city where his wife is from.

He?also enjoys?the?fact that?even though?he plays in a Polish-American band, due to his father-in-law recruiting him, every year they have a different theme. This year, it?will be Brazilian.

?I?ll be in a?Carmen Miranda suit ? lots of sequins and feathers like a Rio celebration,? says Sanchez, excitedly. ?We?re going to make it just like that on New Year?s Day.?

(AP) ? Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who made a fortune as a health care executive, long opposed President Barack Obama's remake of the health insurance market. After the Democratic president won re-election, the Republican governor softened his tone. He said he wanted to "have a conversation" with the administration about implementing the 2010 law. With a federal deadline approaching, he also said while Florida won't set up the exchange for individuals to buy private insurance policies, the feds can do it.

In New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie held his cards before saying he won't set up his own exchange, but he's avoided absolute language and says he could change his mind. He's also leaving his options open to accept federal money to expand Medicaid insurance for people who aren't covered. The caveat, Christie says, is whether Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius can "answer my questions" about its operations and expense.

Both Republican governors face re-election in states that Obama won twice, Christie in 2013 and Scott in 2014. And both will encounter well-financed Democrats.

Their apparent struggles on the issue, along with other postures by their GOP colleagues elsewhere, suggest political uncertainty for Republicans as the Affordable Care Act starts to go into effect two years after clearing Congress without a single Republican vote. The risks also are acute for governors in Democratic-leaning or swing-voting states or who know their records will be parsed should they seek the presidency in 2016 or beyond.

"It's a tough call for many Republican governors who want to do the best thing for their state but don't want to be seen as advancing an overhaul that many Republicans continue to detest," said Whit Ayers, a consultant in Virginia whose clients include Gov. Bill Haslam of Tennessee, a Republican who didn't announce his rejection of a state exchange until days before Sebelius's Dec. 14 deadline.

Indeed, cracks keep growing in the near-unanimous Republican rejection of Obama's health care law that characterized the GOP's political messaging for the last two years. Five GOP-led states ? Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah ? are pressing ahead with state insurance exchanges. Ongoing monitoring by The Associated Press shows that another five Republican-led states are pursuing or seriously a partnership with Washington to help run the new markets.

Democrats, meanwhile, hope to use the law and Republican inflexibility to their advantage, betting that more Americans will embrace the law once it expands coverage. The calculus for voters, Democrats assume, will become more about the policy and less about a polarizing president.

"It shouldn't be complicated at all," said John Anzalone, an Obama pollster who assists Democrats in federal races across the country. Anzalone said Republicans could use their own states-rights argument to justify running exchanges. Instead, he said, "They are blinded by Obama-hatred rather than seeing what's good for their citizens."

Governors can set up their own exchanges, partner with Sebelius' agency or let the federal government do it. The exchanges are set to open Jan. 1, 2014, allowing individuals and businesses to shop online for individual policies from private insurers. Low- and middle-income individuals will get federal premium subsidies calculated on a sliding income scale. Eighteen states plus Washington, DC, most led by Democrats, have committed to opening their own exchanges.

The law also calls for raising the income threshold for Medicaid eligibility to cover people making up to 138 percent of the federal poverty line, or about $15,400 a year for an individual. That could add more than 10 million people, most of them childless adults, to the joint state-federal insurance program for low-income and disabled Americans. Together, the exchanges and the Medicaid expansion are expected to reduce the number of uninsured by about 30 million people within the next decade.

A Supreme Court ruling last summer made the Medicaid expansion voluntary, rather than mandatory for states. At least eight governors, all of them Republicans, have already said they have no plans to expand Medicaid.

The complexity is obvious.

National exit polls from last month's election showed that 49 percent of voters wanted some or all of Obama's signature legislative achievement rolled back. Among self-identified independents, that number was 58 percent. Among Republicans, it spiked to 81 percent. When asked about the role of government, half of respondents said the notion that government is doing too much fits their views more closely than the idea that government should do more.

Before the election, a national AP-GfK poll suggested that 63 percent of respondents preferred their states to run insurance exchanges, almost double the 32 percent who wanted the federal government to take that role. And the same electorate that tilts toward repealing some or all of the new law clearly re-elected its champion.

That's not the most important consideration for governors who face re-election in Republican states. Georgia's Nathan Deal and Alabama's Robert Bentley, who also face 2014 campaigns, initially set up advisory commissions to consider how to carry out the health care law, but they've since jumped ship. But, unlike others, Deal and Bentley aren't eyeing national office.

Three Republicans who are viewed as potential national candidates ? Rick Perry of Texas, Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana ? were full-throated opponents. Jindal, the only one of the three who is term-limited, is the incoming chairman of the Republican Governors Association. In that role, he has co-signed more conciliatory letters to Sebelius asking questions to flesh out how the designs might work.

Republican governors also are feeling quiet pressure from hospitals and other providers.

Deal, the Georgia governor, offers the typical argument for saying no: "We can't afford it." But the law envisions the new Medicaid coverage more or less as a replacement of an existing financing situation that pays hospitals to treat the uninsured. The law contemplates cuts in that program, which already requires state seed money. The idea was that expanding Medicaid coverage would reduce "uncompensated care" costs.

"Some of those cuts were made with the expectation that Medicaid would be expanded and that hospitals would be paid for portions of business that we are not being paid for now," said Don Dalton of the North Carolina Hospital Association.

Dalton's Governor-elect, Republican Pat McCrory, said as a candidate that he opposed Medicaid expansion. Dalton said his industry is leaning on McCrory and legislative leaders, though he commended "their deliberate approach." Similar efforts are underway in South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri and elsewhere.

For Democrats, Anzalone said the framing will be simpler: "You don't want to take a 9-to-1 match? That's a pretty easy investment. These governors who aren't expanding Medicaid, they're basically giving taxpayer money to the states that do."

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? A kid for Kimye: Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are expecting their first child.

The rapper announced at a concert Sunday night that his girlfriend is pregnant. Kardashian was in the crowd at Revel Resort's Ovation Hall with her mother, Kris Jenner, and West's mentor and best friend, Jay-Z. West told the crowd of more than 5,000 in song form: "Now you having my baby."

The crowd roared. And so did people on the Internet.

The news instantly went viral on Twitter and Facebook, with thousands posting and commenting on the expecting couple.

Most of the Kardashian clan also tweeted about the news, including Kim's sisters. Kourtney Kardashian wrote: "Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement!"

West, 35, also told concertgoers to congratulate his "baby mom" and that this was the "most amazing thing."

Representatives for West and Kardashian, 32, didn't immediately respond to emails about the pregnancy.

The rapper and reality TV star went public in March.

Kardashian married NBA player Kris Humphries in August 2011 and their divorce is not finalized.

West's Sunday-night show was his third consecutive performance at Revel. He took the stage for nearly two hours, performing hits like "Good Life," ''Jesus Walks" and "Clique" in an all-white ensemble with two bandmates.

(AP) ? Connecticut has given men's basketball coach Kevin Ollie a contract extension through the end of the 2017-18 season.

The deal, signed Saturday, is worth just over $7 million and begins Jan. 1. When Ollie was hired in September, he was signed for just one season.

"As I said in my first press conference, I want to be here a lifetime and this is a step, hopefully a great step, in the program moving forward," Ollie said in a news release announcing the deal.

Ollie, who turned 40 on Thursday, was hired after Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun retired. His original deal had a pro-rated value of just over $465,000, the school said.

Ollie has led UConn to a 9-2 record despite losing five underclassmen from last year's team after it was announced that the Huskies were academically ineligible for the upcoming postseason.

"I am incredibly impressed with the way Kevin has led our program and his interaction with the administration, his coaching staff, the student athletes and our donors and fans," said Warde Manuel, the school's athletic director. "His team has performed incredible on the floor and in the classroom. All these factors contributed to my thinking that the time was right to come to this agreement with Kevin."

Ollie, who played point guard for Calhoun from 1991-95, was his former coach's hand-picked successor. He became an assistant at UConn in 2010, after 13 years as an NBA journeyman. He had never been a head coach on any level.

Ollie has quickly established himself with his upbeat and energetic style, running practices that focus on conditioning and accountability.

"Kevin moved gracefully and seamlessly into this position of immense responsibility over the course of the fall," said school President Susan Herbst. "He demonstrated to us that he is a genuine leader of extraordinary talents."

Israel Builds up Forces in the North, as Violence Continues on the West Bank

Lebanese media outlets reported Sunday that Israeli fighter jets have breach the country?s airspace and flew over Marjayoun, north of Metula.? The reports also said that increased presence of IDF Ground Forces were spotted near the border.

Fierce fighting is now raging across Syria with the government retaking areas in Hama province and Turkey saying that Abbas was about to fall.

On the West Bank violence is increasing as well.? New Intifada? 14 West Bank Attacks on Thursday

On Sabbath?a female soldier was hurt Saturday near Neve Tsuf and the civilian motorist driving on the 443 highway to Jerusalem near Maccabim ? both by flying rocks thrown by Palestinians. IDF and Border Guard troops were also attacked with bottle bombs in three parts of the West Bank. Saturday night, the Nahal? Bazelet battalion detained two Palestinians south of Nablus in possession of a pistol, two knives, a bottle bomb and instructions for their use.

As violence increases, the polls indicate that Likud is fast loosing ground to both the far right and the center/left peace parties. If the hemorrhage continues it is possible that even without a conflict Labour will gain enough seats to be asked to form the next government.? If that happens it could take until the end of Feb for a new government in Israel; during the intervening period Netanyahu will remain as PM at the head of a caretaker government.

A breach has now developed between President Peres and PM Netanyahu, as?the Likud party on Sunday?attacked President Shimon Peres for saying that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was a good paryner for peace.

Bibi and Likud once again put their foot in their mouth, causing widespread anger across Israel over Likud?s condemnation of President Peres and his remarks about Abbas.

The?attack by Likud on Israel?s president,?follows remarks by Peres on Sunday in his address to some 160 diplomats. Peres said he differed from the view of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu who repeatedly says there is no partner on the other side [to avoid peace talks], and said that he has known Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) for thirty years and is convinced that he is the only Arab leader with whom Israel can conclude an agreement.

Labor chairwoman Shelly Yacimovich on Sunday castigated the Likud party for it?s harsh criticism of President Shimon Peres,?who said that Abbas was a true partner for peace.

?The Likud?s lashing out at the president of the country, one of the symbols of the state of Israel, is aggressive and contemptible,? Yacimovich said, calling Peres the best ambassador Israel has and adding that his views represented Israel?s consensus.

The president represents the state and the Likud attack is causing widespread anger against Likud across the nation.

(AP) ? Muhammad Shahid Nazir is a testament to the age-old adage that if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day, but if you teach a man to sing about fish, his song will shoot up the British pop chart.

The 31-year-old Pakistani fishmonger catapulted to fame in recent weeks in the unlikeliest of circumstances: while hawking frozen snapper and mackerel for one British pound ($1.61) at Queens Market in London.

Not comfortable with shouting about his merchandise to attract customers, as many vendors do, he came up with a simple ditty that someone caught on video and posted on YouTube earlier this year. It became a viral sensation and has been viewed over 7 million times.

"One Pound Fish changed my whole life," said Nazir, who returned to Pakistan on Thursday to a hero's welcome and has been inundated with requests to perform and do advertisements. "I am so happy now."

To describe the song as catchy would be a gross understatement. It drills deep into your brain and sits like a lyrical jack-in-the box that goes off every few minutes, causing one to break into song involuntarily to the amusement, or perhaps growing despair, of those nearby.

"Come on ladies, come on ladies, one pound fish! Have a, have a look, one pound fish!" sings Nazir, as he points to his wares behind him. "Very, very good, one pound fish! Very, very cheap, one pound fish!"

In an era in which the Internet seems to bestow almost everyone with 15 minutes of fame, Nazir's YouTube video could have been the end of the story. But Warner Music offered Nazir a deal to record a techno-infused version of "One Pound Fish," he said. In a Bollywood-style video, he performs in a snazzy suit alongside scantily-clad dancers to a South Asian-influenced pop beat.

The music video has been viewed nearly 9 million times since it was posted on YouTube about three weeks ago. As the song gained momentum, people began talking about it as a serious contender for the fabled No. 1 Christmas single in the United Kingdom ? the song that tops the chart in the week the holiday falls. Past chart-toppers include The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

In the end, "One Pound Fish" made it to No. 29 on the top-40 chart. It was beaten by another Internet sensation, PSY's "Gangnam Style," which clocked in at No. 6. The No. 1 spot was clinched by a version of the Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by The Justice Collective, a group of star musicians who recorded the charity single for victims of a stampede at a soccer stadium in 1989 that killed 96 people.

Nazir definitely doesn't view missing out on the No. 1 Christmas single as a setback. He has returned to his home country to get a visa for France for the release of his hit song there and also has plans to take "One Pound Fish" to the United States, where he hopes it will make a big splash.

It has been quite a ride. He grew up in the little-known town of Pattoki near the eastern city of Lahore. His father owned a transport company, but his passion was always music, and he spent his youth singing both religious songs and pop hits by stars like Michael Jackson.

He traveled to Britain to study but eventually got a work permit and started working as a fishmonger in London nine months ago, he said. He now wants to pursue a career in music, but the fish stall in London will always hold a special place in his heart.

"I can't forget England, Queens Market, my fish stall because that place changed my whole life," said Nazir.

Englishman wakes up from stroke speaking fluent Welsh

Disclaimer: this post is not intended to encourage the harming of people, animals, or property. Rather, these stories are to be used as creative writing springboards.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/9767191/Englishman-wakes-up-from-stroke-speaking-fluent-Welsh.html

Alun Morgan, 81, was evacuated to Wales during the Second World War but left 70 years ago.

During his time there he was surrounded by Welsh speakers but never learned the language himself.

He left the country aged 10 and lived his life in England and recently suffered a severe stroke.

But when Mr Morgan regained consciousness three weeks later, doctors discovered he was speaking Welsh and could not remember any English.

It is thought that the Welsh Mr Morgan heard as a boy had sunk in without him knowing and was unlocked after he suffered the stroke.

Mr Morgan, who is retired and lives with his wife Yvonne in Bathwick, Somerset, is now being taught to speak English again.

"I'd not lived in Wales since I was evacuated there during the war. Gradually the English words came back, but it wasn't easy,'' he said.

Mr Morgan had been watching the lunchtime news when his wife noticed he was not responsive and called an ambulance.

He was rushed into hospital where he spent three weeks being stabilised and assessed.

Doctors diagnosed Mr Morgan with aphasia, a form of brain damage which causes a shift in the brain's language centre.

He was helped by the Communication Support Service, run by the Stroke Association in Bath.

In 2012 grandmother Kay Russell, 49, of Bishop Cleeve in Gloucestershire, suffered a migraine and began speaking in a French accent.

Sarah Colwill, 35, of Plymouth, Devon, also suffered a migraine and began speaking with a Chinese accent.

Doctors say they suffered Foreign Accent Syndrome, a condition which damages the part of the brain that controls speech and word formation.

More than 150,000 people have a stroke every year in the UK, and a third end up with aphasia as a result.

Chris Clark, Stroke Association?s UK Director of Life After Stroke Services said:

?Stroke can have a big affect on individuals and lead to personality and physical changes. With a stroke, blood supply to the brain is cut off and in the areas starved of oxygen, brain cells die and damage can be caused.

?Aphasia is caused by damage to the areas of the brain responsible for language.

"As a result, individuals who were previously able to communicate through speaking, understanding, reading and writing become more limited in their ability to do so."

A Vancouver Stager's Top 10 Staging Tips for a Staged Bathroom

A Vancouver Stager?s Top 10 Staging Tips for a Great Staged Bathroom

As a Vancouver, B.C. Home Stager, I like to follow these simple guidelines when staging a bathroom for sale:

1.???? ?Edit Personal Items

In this Powder Room/very small bathroom, the bathroom counters were full of personal items.? Home buyers don?t want to see messy toothpaste tubes and used toothbrushes.? These items are too personal.? Purchase plastic baskets from the dollar store, fill them with all your personal toiletries and store them away in the bathroom cupboards.

Before Home Staging

Powder room before home staging

After Home Staging

Powder room after home staging

2.???? ?Create a hotel boutique chic atmosphere

I love staying in European hotels and enjoying the lovely, white, fresh linens, soaps and amenities.?? Nothing says hotel boutique bathroom like a white waffle curtain and simple curtain rings.? When staging your bathroom, remove colourful, frilly, too personal shower curtains with a clean, simple, white shower curtain for maximum impact.

3.???? Remove the germy ?ick? factor

Remove or hide away the toilet brush.? Just think about it.? No one wants to see or think about what germs linger on this apparatus, never mind be reminded of where it?s been.? Out of sight is out of mind.? That goes for garbage cans too. ?If at all possible, slip garbage cans inside bathroom cupboards.?

Master Bath Before Home Staging

Master Bath After Home Staging

4.???? Create a dreamy, spa-like atmosphere

A Master Bathroom is a luxury.? It?s a room where you can light candles, pour a nice warm bubble bath and enjoy a good book or a glass of wine.? You want to be pampered in a Master Bath, so set the stage.? Add candles, natural sponges, brand new loofahs anything to remind one of a spa.

After Home Staging

Master bath after home staging

5.???? Use soft, natural colours

Use colours in a bathroom that are calming and spa-like.? Soft blues, aquas, natural taupe, warm grays, soft greens are all great choices for a bathroom.

6.???? Add artwork

When adding artwork to your home for sale, don?t forget the bathroom.? So many times I see no art in the bathroom.? Not only should you add artwork, but don?t be shy.? Stage the bathroom with? larger pieces, not just teeny tiny pictures. This adds more impact and drama.?

Before Home Staging

Master bath before home staging

After Home Staging

Master bath after home staging

7.???? Clean, clean, clean

This probably should be point number one, but no one wants to walk into a hotel bathroom and find the previous guest?s hair in the sink or bathtub.? Well, the same goes for a home that?s for sale.? Clean, polish, wash, shine, dust and then do it all over again!? Make sure that the bathroom looks and smells clean.?

8.???? The Bathroom is a no-carpet, rug or toilet lid cover zone!

Remove any used bath mats, furry toilet seat covers, and crocheted toilet roll covers.? Not only do these items retain nasty odors; they are also dated.? Also, remove any wall to wall carpet from the bathroom floor.? A carpeted bathroom is a huge turn-off for buyers and you will spend money wisely by replacing carpet with a tile, ceramic floor.

9.???? Think about a bathroom theme.

Don?t go too kitchy or crazy, but the Master Bathroom in this example was located in a home near the ocean.? For this reason, I added a glass starfish, some shells, and a painting with water and sea shells in it.?

After Home Staging

Master bath after home staging

10.You can?t go wrong with white.

I know it?s tempting to put the guest towels with the gold tassels and brocade out in the bathroom, but try to resist.? Again, when you enter a hotel bathroom, all the towels are white.? White, fresh, new, fluffy towels send a message that this bathroom is clean and crisp.??

Don't forget - kitchens and bathrooms sell houses.? Follow these 10 simple staging tips for your bathroom and you will have a better chance of attracting more home buyers.

Netflix CEO gets pay bump after 2012 cut

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Netflix CEO Reed Hastings' pay will double to $4 million next year, after he took a pay cut due to management missteps this year.

Hastings' annual salary will rise to $2 million in 2013 and he will get $2 million in stock options, according to a securities filing Friday.

That's up from a salary of $500,000 and $1.5 million in stock options for 2012.

Hastings' total pay for 2012 was down 43 percent from $3.5 million in 2011, when some controversial decisions, including a steep price hike on subscriptions, sent the stock spiraling. It fell from a high above $300 to a low below $70 per share.

This year, shares are up 29 percent, closing Friday at $89.33. Recovering from the missteps, the company expects to add around 5 million U.S. subscribers, to between 26.4 million and 27.1 million by the end of the year.

Ouya developer console gets an official unboxing, flaunts - Engadget

It's a little early for an Ouya teardown, but Kickstarters who chipped in $699 won't have to wait long to see what the little console is made of -- Ouya's developer hardware is transparent. The console's team decided to cut the inevitable march of unboxing videos off at the neck, offering fans a quick preview of the package it's shipping out to devs. The standard accoutrements are there -- the tiny console itself, two prototype controllers with batteries, HDMI and power adapters, plus a micro USB cord and a letter to developers thanking them for their investment and warning them of the early build's bugs. The note also cautions deep-pocketed gamers that the device is built specifically for developer use, and has no games to placate eager couch potatoes. The video shows the console booting up, and even demonstrates how easy it is to open the hardware. Skip on past the break to get a glimpse at what early adopters and developers are getting their hands on.

UFC 155?s Derek Brunson was a cheerleader before he started fighting

Long before he put together a 9-2 record and earned a spot against Chris Leben at UFC 155, Derek Brunson was a cheerleader. As he shows in his audition video for "The Ultimate Fighter," Brunson was an accomplished tumbler and stunter. Skip to the 2:10 mark to see him toss his partner up into one-handed stunts and throw a double-twisting flip.

He talked about his cheerleading past with MMA Fighting, and pointed out how difficult cheerleading can be.

"I can do flips, and I was like tossing girls in the air. That's where I got my strength from, just controlling girls in the air. You get core strength, your chest gets all big. It makes you really strong, like you look on steroids, but you don't have to take steroids because of cheerleading."

Though Brunson wrestled in college, he said he did have scholarship offers for cheerleading. Wrestling and eventually MMA won out. Brunson admitted that MMA is more dangerous than cheerleading, but it's still tough.

"Cheerleading is definitely hard on your body. That's why I decided to wrestle in college, not cheerlead."

Man Bites Dog: China Fines Apple for Copyright Infringement

A Chinese court fined Apple 1 million yuan, or roughly $160,000, because its App Store hosted third-party applications that were peddling pirated e-books. The ruling stems from a suit brought by a group of Chinese authors earlier this year. The group originally was seeking 10 million yuan.

Patient Care Technician Registered Nurse Training Programs Chicago

nurse training Chicagowww.TTIMedicalSchool.com

Do you want to become a Nurse in the growing healthcare industry and you don?t have a clear path to achieve your goal?

Did you know that a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing can cost up to $55,000 or more.? Did you know that you can become a nurse at 1/10 of this cost or about $5,500.? There is a path that can lead you to become a Registered Nurse (RN) and here is the secret to your success.? It?s simple. CNA to PCT to RN.? CNA> nursing home position, then PCT > hospital position, then the hospital will pay you to work and to complete your nursing degree via their hospital benefits program.? Here are the 5 steps:

???? First, choose a healthcare training school, that provides a great Nurse via Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program.?? Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant is the first and most important step in reaching your goal to become a nurse.? This is because, for a low investment cost in education, you can take and pass the state CNA examination. This path will allow you to begin work in a nursing home, assisted living or home health care environment.? By taking and passing this rigorous program you will learn the basics of ?compassionate caregiving? and you will see if this is truly your life ambition.

? ? ?Jobs as a Certified Nursing Assistant are plentiful.? After you pass the State examination, you will apply to 6 nursing homes in person and you will usually get 1-2 job offers.? You can pick the offer you prefer and jump into a full time CNA position with benefits.? Completing training and becoming a CNA is like the ?boot camp? of healthcare.? You learn the basics that you will never forget as you move into other phases of your successful healthcare career.

? ? ?Your next step is to take additional classes to become a Nurse via Patient Care Technician (PCT).?? PCTs learn phlebotomy skills, i.e. how to draw blood and EKG skills i.e. working with the heart monitoring systems.? Becoming a Certified Phlebotomy Technician and a Certified EKG Technician allows you to sit for the national Certified Patient Care Technician examination through the National Health career Association. Our school, T.T.I. Medical Training, offers the theory, practical and clinical aspects to pass these examinations.

? ? ?Once certified, and with some working experience as a CNA, you can now apply to get hired by a hospital.? Your hourly wage will increase from $9-$11 hr. as a CNA to $15-$18 hr. as a PCT.? Hospitals love to hire CNA?s with some nursing home experience to work as PCT?s. As a Patient Care Technician you will have new and added responsibilities by providing more technical skills to patients. You will be performing venipuncture and additional testing like: pulse oximetry, electrocardiograms and other testing as ordered by the doctor.? Compassionate caregiving skills are still instrumental and enhanced through more experience in the PCT position.

? ? ?Finally, if you do a great job in your Nurse via Patient Care Technician position i.e. coming to work on-time, providing excellent patient care, working with your healthcare team, you can inform the hospital that you wish to pursue a degree in nursing.? Believe it or not, the hospital will accommodate your work schedule and pay your tuition.? You may have to sign an agreement that you are willing to work at the hospital for a specified time period for their education investment.? As former student, Kathy, told me,? ?I love working at this hospital, I would never leave.? They paid for my tuition and now I?m an Registered Nurse in the acute ward!?? If Kathy can do it, so can you.

Becoming a Nurse via CNA and Patient Care Technician training program is a unique and cost effective path to achieve your dream.? Our school, T.T.I. Medical Training, has several former students take this secret path to their new found success. Others plan to move into challenging and rewarding careers as: Physicians Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) or even Doctor of Medicine, M.D.? Age and gender is not a factor as both men and women of all ages can take this path.? For more information about this unique path from CNA to PCT to RN contact? (773) 941-9000 or www.TTIMedicalSchool.com for an immediate free consultation ?so that you can begin to achieve all that you can believe!?

DiCaprio gave away Winslet at secret wedding?

Tyrone Siu / REUTERS

Kate Winslet and Ned Rocknroll in Hong Kong earlier in December.

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Kate Winslet's heart did go on.?The 37-year-old Oscar winner tied the knot with boyfriend Ned Rocknroll, 34, earlier this month in what apparently was a very hush-hush ceremony in New York, her rep confirmed Wednesday to E! News.?

The private nuptials were "attended by her two children and a very few friends and family," the rep said, adding that the couple got engaged over the summer.?

More fun facts about Ned Rocknroll

According to Britain's Sun, Leonardo DiCaprio gave the bride away in lieu of her father, the wedding being that much of a secret.

Rocknroll, a nephew of billionaire Richard Branson, and Winslet dated for about a year and a half before taking the plunge. The relationship with her fellow Brit developed after both were houseguests of Branson's on exclusive Necker Island in the Caribbean in August 2011 when a fire broke out, forcing the villa's occupants to evacuate. Rocknroll was the one who accompanied her and her kids back home, though she had been vacationing with model Louis Dowler.?

This is Winslet's third trip down the aisle, though it's the first time we really would advise her to not take her husband's name. (Or, then again...)

Before she got her MRS, Winslet got a CBE from the Queen!

She has a 12-year-old daughter, Mia, with first husband Jim Threapleton, and a 9-year-old son, Joe, with director Sam Mendes.

She and Mendes announced they were divorcing in 2010, a year after she won a Best Actress Oscar for "The Reader" and a Golden Globe for the Mendes-directed "Revolutionary Road."

More secret celebrity weddings

Rocknroll (born Abel Smith) was married once before, to socialite Eliza Cowdray.?

Small Business Marketing ? Authority Marketing

Small Business Marketing – Authority MarketingSo I talk a lot about authority marketing to my small business marketing peeps, but I don?t think I have ever spelled it out here. Not sure this is the ?official version?, I just know what works for biz owners on a practical basis.

First off, what is authority marketing? It is taking the best bits of your business and becoming a champion of those pieces!

I talk (some would say ad nausea) about marketing, but in the final reckoning, there are some pieces of marketing that I champion?

  • having clear and definable activities that you do which will grow your audience
  • knowing EXACTLY what you are selling and how that fits into your marketing plan
  • and finally, totally digging into each different marketing channel that I think will help my readers and figuring out how to best explain that to my small business peeps

In the world of marketing, this could be construed as my USP (unique selling proposition), but in my world, it is just what I do, day in and day out.

So how does that transfer to your small business? First off, I firmly believe you have to love your industry. You have to read about it, write about it and immerse yourself into the culture of whatever business you choose. While there is some talk out there about choosing profitable industries, I think that anything can be profitable if you care and then leverage that caring into something that people want to buy.

What does that look like practically?

  • Sign up for newsletters from your competitors. DO NOT copy them, but use their info as a springboard to figure out what to write and talk about.
  • Attend industry events. It can be easy to get so busy working that you are not out there keeping on the edge of your industry. Knowing what is new and exciting about your industry is vital.
  • Share your knowledge. This is a HUGE one! When I am getting ready to write a post, I will oftentimes look around to see what other people think about it. If you are a thought leader in your industry, you WILL get opportunities that you did not even know existed.
  • Be excited. If you are not excited about what is going on, how can you expect anyone else to get excited? While it is hard for me to believe, not everyone loves marketing. That does not stop me from carrying on about it and my enthusiasm has caused some other people to care?that is being a champion for your industry.
  • Don?t worry about the people who don?t care. One of the hardest things in business is try and convince someone to care who doesn?t. Stop trying to convert the non-carers and focus on your biggest advocates PLUS the people on the fringes who could care if you explain how exciting it is. You will never sell your product or service to world, focus on selling it to the people who need or want it and forget the rest.
  • Get off the internet and get out the door. When I meet someone in real life who only knows me from online, I think they think I am just some person who writes emails and blog posts in some far away land (like the great and powerful Oz). It may surprise you know that I do at least one if not more big events a month, and many small speaking events (at least 6). This is because being insulated online (at home alone) stagnates you and dulls your skills. It is only when you are talking face to face with people that you can see their reactions and know how your message is really being received.

So, now you have all this knowledge, how are you going to get it out there to the masses who want to buy what you are selling?

  • Write a book. Sigh, this has been on my to-do list forever, but it is actually a great way to VASTLY increase your knowledge and credibility.
  • Blog about it. The number one, easiest way to start spreading your influence. The thing is to be consistent and make sure to always provide value.
  • Webinars. The cost of this technology is so small as to be almost a non-issue. Start doing great webinars, tape them and then let them spread.
  • Videos. If you are excited about your industry, let it out in videos. They can be screen capture or just you talking. Start this one TODAY.
  • Social media. Get on them, start talking and you will grow a following of people who are interested in what you have to say. Share your ideas as well as OPS (other people?s stuff).
  • In person. Go to networking events and talk about your biz. See what people think and be interesting.
  • Have an email plan. Not a plain jane newsletter, but actual info about your industry that people will want to read.

Okay, that is enough to get you started. Now go do something!

PS ? When you are starting your authority marketing, no one will care. They will be busy doing whatever it is that they were doing before you decided to start and will need a while to figure out that you are out there. DO NOT get sad or disappointed. It takes time and consistency to become an industry leader and it will not happen overnight, but if you start today, you will be ahead of everyone else that hasn?t (and probably won?t start).

Remember that every person who you influence, who notices that you are doing something has the ability to share your message with someone else, and so on and so on.

Starbucks using coffee cups to send political message: 'Come ...

NEW YORK -- Starbucks is using its coffee cups to jump into the political fray in Washington.

The world's biggest coffee chain is asking employees at cafes in the Washington, D.C., area to scribble the words "Come Together" on cups for drink orders on Thursday and Friday. CEO Howard Schultz says the words are intended as a message to lawmakers about the damage being caused by the divisive negotiations over the "fiscal cliff."

It's the first time employees at Starbucks cafes are being asked to write anything other than customers' names on cups.

While companies generally steer clear of politics to avoid alienating customers, the plea to "Come Together" is a sentiment unlikely to cause controversy. If anything, Starbucks could score points with customers and burnish its image as a socially conscious company.

This isn't the first time the coffee chain is using its platform to send a political message. In the summer of 2011, Schultz also asked other CEOs and the public to stop making campaign contributions until politicians found a way to deal with a crisis over the debt ceiling that led to a downgrade in the country's credit rating.

For the latest push, Starbucks is taking out an ad in the Washington Post on Thursday showing a cup with the words "Come Together" on it.

The "fiscal cliff" refers to the steep tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect Jan. 1, unless the White House and Congress reach an agreement to avoid them.

As for whether customers will be confused by the "Come Together" message or understand that it's related to the fiscal cliff, Schultz said in an interview that there's wide public awareness about the negotiations and that Starbucks will use social media to explain the effort. The Seattle-based company says test runs at select stores showed operations wouldn't be slowed.

Schultz says the message is a way to underscore the damage being done to the "consumer psyche and behavior" by the talks. Although he says Starbucks sales haven't been affected, he points out that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. CEO Mike Duke warned that fears over the fiscal cliff could cause Americans to pull back on holiday spending. Early figures have shown a relatively weak shopping season.

As for the negotiations, Schultz isn't taking any sides on the issues of tax increases or spending cuts.
