Did you know that children who become obese as early as age 2 are more likely to be obese adults?
Did you know that 70 percent of obese youths have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease?
Did you know that childhood obesity had tripled since 1980?
I remember being so excited to get home from school to play outside until my mother yelled my name from the front door to come in for the night. Things have change quite a bit in the last 30 years, and the statistics prove it.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in New Hampshire, 12 percent of school-age youths are obese, and in the United States, the number is 13 percent. All of them will be at a higher risk of bone deficiency, heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, depression and diabetes.
Childhood obesity is out of control in our country. There are many reasons we?re seeing this epidemic continue to rise: lack of physical activity, increase in price of healthy food choices, increase in electronic developments, increase in parental workload, lack of education ? and the list continues.
But it does us no good to list the reasons and who or what is to blame. The only thing worth doing is taking action.
