Council sends annex lease to subcommittee ? Local News ...

SALEM ? The City Council did not take a vote on the lease of 120 Washington St. last night, but moved the issue to the board?s subcommittee on administration and finance.

Mayor Kim Driscoll hopes to sign a three-year lease of the City Hall Annex at 120 Washington St. The city has been taking one-year extensions of its lease of 120 Washington St. after Driscoll?s proposal to sign a five-year deal with the building owner was not approved by the City Council in 2011.

The subcommittee will vet the issue and send it back to the full council for a final vote. For the lease to be approved, it would need a two-thirds vote of the board, or eight councilors.

The subcommittee?s next meeting is posted for Thursday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 93 Washington St.

The annex, a stone?s throw from City Hall, has housed various city departments, including licensing, planning and community development, since 2001. The city?s initial, 10-year lease of the space expired in February 2011.

Council subcommittees assigned

The council?s subcommittees and liaison assignments to other city boards were shuffled for the new year this week.

Councilor William Legault, who was appointed to fill the board?s councilor-at-large vacancy earlier this week, was assigned to two subcommittees: government services and ordinances, licenses and legal affairs. He was also named council liaison to the Disabilities Commission, a post formerly held by Joan Lovely.

As council president, Jerry Ryan assigned his colleagues to subcommittees and removed himself from the government services, community and economic development and administration and finance subcommittees, where he served last year.

Ryan stepped down as chairman of the community and economic development subcommittee and named Councilor Josh Turiel to the post.

Councilor Paul Prevey takes over chairmanship of the administration and finance committee from Councilor Robert McCarthy and Councilor Todd Siegel takes over chairmanship of the public health, safety and the environment committee from Prevey.

In addition to their subcommittee assignments, councilors were shuffled as liaisons to numerous city boards. All 11 councilors, including Ryan, serve as a liaison to another committee, from the board of health to the veteran?s council.
