Speaking for Characters | Uphill Writing

Walking along the path of narration?

We?ve looked at who should be?telling the story, but now I?d like to look at which of your characters should be telling?YOUin your novel.

Does that sound odd?? Well, look at it this way: the chances are that you will have at least one character who shares your POV about Life, the Universe, and Everything.? Yes, it is possible that you spread your personal stand about things around various characters, so they are all singing the same tune, but I don?t recommend that.? For one thing, it would be boring.

If everyone has the same ideas and notions, you are not describing ?real life?.? Your scenario would be more like a Jonestown conclave, a cult, and it would be without serious conflict.? Even among like-minded individuals, there is room for dissension, even if it is only minor.

Your characters have to come in colors and flavors for your story to ?ring true?.

So, unless you are describing a cult of true believers, you will have to decide which of your characters will impart?your?message, and which?and hopefully there will be some?are at odds with the ideas.

Does this mean that every novel you write has to have some sort of message?? What do you think about that?

We?ll discuss that notion later on? but for now, who speaks for you?
