NFL Preseason Game Capsules

Jake Locker struggled in his first start for the Titans, but Tennessee nonetheless picked up a 30-7 preseason win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Locker completed only 4-of-11 passes for 21 yards with an interception, but did run for 24 yards on a pair of carries. Matt Hasselbeck threw for 29 yards on 4-for-5 passing in limited action for Tennessee, which lost its first preseason game against Seattle. Chris Johnson, who only ran for eight yards on five carries in the opener, rebounded with 46 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Josh Freeman went 4-for-10 for 21 yards with a touchdown pass to Mike Williams, while both of Tampa Bay's featured running backs struggled. LeGarrette Blount was held to 11 yards on eight carries while rookie Doug Martin carried the ball seven times for 23 yards.

Final Score: Carolina 23, Miami 17

Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Cam Newton threw for 119 yards and one touchdown on 8-of-11 passes in one quarter of play, as the Carolina Panthers downed the Miami Dolphins, 23-17, in preseason action. Jonathan Stewart ran for an early touchdown and DeAngelo Williams caught a nine-yard score from Newton later in the opening quarter for a 17-0 lead. Rookie Ryan Tannehill got the start under center for the Dolphins and connected on just 11-of-23 passes for 100 yards. His competition for the starting nod, Matt Moore, was just as ineffective, tossing for 57 yards on 5- of-15 throws. Miami's wide receiving corps, sans the recently released Chad Johnson, was keyed by Jeff Fuller, who caught four passes for 38 yards.

Final Score: Minnesota 36, Buffalo 14

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Christian Ponder completed 10-of-13 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown, as the Minnesota Vikings beat the Buffalo Bills, 36-14, in preseason action. Ponder, who played the first three series, led the Vikings to a pair of scoring drives. He threw a one-yard TD pass to fullback Jerome Felton, but the 8-play, 80-yard march was highlighted by a leap from wide receiver Jerome Simpson over the body of free safety Jarius Byrd on a 33-yard play. Ryan Fitzpatrick played the first four series for the Bills and finished 8- of-11 for 58 yards, including a 31- yard scoring strike to Donald Jones.
