MILWAUKEE -- The hot weather is taking its toll on animals, but some pets have no place to go.The Wisconsin Humane Society has become a safe haven from the heat."Already this summer, we have seen heat stroke victims come into the Humane Society. In one unfortunate case, the dog didn't make it. This kind of weather is dangerous for companion animals," said Angela Speed of the Wisconsin Humane Society.Imagine wearing a fur coat the past two days. Tthat's what it feels like for the animals."The dog that didn't make it was actually in a shaded area, in a garage, but didn't have access to cool water and was left outside for 10 to 12 hours during the day," Speed said.Speed said excessive panting and fatigue are clear signs of heat illness. Along with the weather, WISN 12's Facebook campaign with the Wisconsin Humane Society is heating up.The station's goal at the beginning of July was to get 25,000 fans. In the past two days, 700 people have given the station the thumbs up on its Facebook page. The campaign has inspired two others to give."We are so grateful to WISN and Stan Kass for his donation and to the anonymous donor who matched his donation," Speed said. People don't need to give money. Just give WISN 12 News a like on our Facebook. If the station reaches 25,000 fans by July 31, WISN 12 will donate $2,500 to the shelter to help the homeless animals until they find good homes.WISN 12's donation will go directly toward the medical care of the animals and educational programs that teach children compassion for pets.As of early Friday evening, WISN 12 News had 24,177 fans.
