Scorsese, von Trier team on 'Five'

Martin Scorsese and Lars von Trier

Martin Scorsese and Lars von Trier

Martin Scorsese is teaming with Danish director Lars von Trier, whose pic "Melancholia" preems Wednesday in competition in Cannes, to direct docu feature "The Five Obstructions."The project is a followup to the 2003 film of the same title that Von Trier shot with fellow Dane Jorgen Leth, which attempted to get to the heart of the filmmaking process through a series of five cinematic challenges. In the original film, Von Trier instructs Leth, who he says is one of his heroes, to remake Leth's seminal 1967 short "The Perfect Human" five times, while providing him with a different set of "obstructions" for each. One "obstruction," for example, was that no shot should last longer than 12 frames, while another was that it should be shot in "the most miserable place in the world."Von Trier will apply the same method to his project with Scorsese with a new set of obstructions. Further details will not be disclosed, said Von Trier's shingle Zentropa Real, which is co-producing with Scorsese's Sikelia Prods. The project, which is set to start lensing next year, will be produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff for Sikelia, and Carsten Holst and Louise Vesth for Zentropa Real.TrustNordisk is handling international sales.
