Many aspiring writers set their sights on publishing their first book, short story or even a magazine article. And while it is great to have goals, in fact, necessary to have them, it can also keep them from exploring other options that may come along in the meantime. For instance, they may scoff at creative writing contests and think they are nothing more than a waste of time. However, all writers should be looking at writing contests as a great way not only to make a few bucks or gain the use of a valuable service but also as a way to stay in sharp form.
If you are only going to work on the novel that you have been working on, off and on for years, you are missing out. Not only could you win a great prize in these contests, you can use that experience in a submissions letter when the book is nearly finished. Editors like to see that writers are putting themselves out there, learning what their strengths are and where they might need some work. If you are going to shop a book as a pure writing virgin, then you better hope that you are owed a huge favor by at least one of the Fates or your manuscript will not even make it past the first reading assistant. It is at this point that some writers will shrug and say they tried and failed and never bother again. Can you really call yourself a writer if you are going to give up so willingly? Can you really call yourself a writer if you are not jumping at every chance to get your words in front of at least one pair of eyes?
A contest is not always about money, although that is often a very nice prize. A big enough contest win could potentially give you a little extra time to actually work on bigger projects. Other prize options though can be far more valuable. One famed writing contest allows you to have your work read ad reviewed by an editor with the possibility of getting a publishing contract. With these types of wins, you will get honest feedback that can allow you to strengthen your overall writing skills and can show you where some of your main issues are.
Remember, while entering writing contests is always a good idea, there are many that require an entry fee- if you are on a tight budget, choose the ones that require an entry fee carefully and use some of the free ones to practice your skills and increase your luck.
