Woonsocket supplemental tax vote today | WPRI.com

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Rhode Island's House Finance Committee Tuesday approved legislation that would authorize Woonsocket to levy an additional 13% tax on property and motor vehicles this year.

The committee passed the bill by a vote of two to 12.

If approved, the supplemental tax would raise up to $6.6 million for the city.

Mayor Leo Fontaine has told Eyewitness News that the supplemental tax increase is necessary. The school department is currently operating with a $10 million deficit.

The bill is sponsored by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Daniel Da Ponte. It passed the Senate May 3. ?

The hearing will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Channel 15 by Cox and Full Channel subscribers and on Channel 34 by Verizon viewers.
