Gingrich in Iowa urges more responsible citizenry (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich says Americans need to take responsibility at all levels for fixing the nation's economic and social problems.

The former House Speaker is now leading in some national polls as well as in early voting Iowa. He says the growth of government has come in part because some Americans have let their duty as citizens slip.

Gingrich tells about 500 insurance company employees at their Des Moines headquarters that they have responsibilities to their community and to their neighborhood, and "we're all going to have to roll up our sleeves and be a little bit more responsible in the next 30 years."

Gingrich is on a two-day visit to Iowa, where the Jan. 3 kickoff nominating caucuses are little more than a month away.
